Welcome to Mission, British Columbia, Canada. Mission is a small town located in the Fraser Valley, on the banks of the Fraser River. It was founded in 1892 on the land of the Sto:lo First Nations. Despite its small size, the city of Mission has a vast and vibrant history.

Our story today focuses on the rich education history that is housed within the City of Mission. Mission has been the home of St. Mary’s Residential School, Mission’s own Public School District (SD75), as well as welcoming the Conseil Scolaire Francophone de la Colombie Britannique (CSF or SD93) into its community.

The focus of this website will be on French education in the City of Mission, focusing on the history of the French Immersion program, as well as the Francophone school (please see the the page French Immersion in British Columbia and Canada for a definition of these programs) during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

Dedication

This website was created as part of a research project in collaboration with the Mission Community Archives (you can visit their webpage here), who supplied many of the photographs used throughout the site as well as many primary sources such as newspaper clippings and school publications to act as the basis of the information provided on this site. I would like to thank the archive staff (Val, in particular) for making the accommodations necessary for me to have been able to conduct my research safely during the COVID-19 pandemic, going above and beyond to locate topic-specific materials both while I was at the archives and on her own time, and showing such enthusiasm towards my project.
